Following a theme: Help build a better birdhouse

I originally wrote this post as a comment responese to Robyn’s ‘We might be giants‘ article, but decided it needed more. Please take a moment and read this article, I think it is very poignant and valuable to everyone.

I’m very happy to read this article. I’ve never really thought about the lyrics to the song, but it makes perfect sense. If I may, I’d take this concept a bit further, focusing on what is important to you in ‘life’. In fact, replacing almost every instance of ‘Fedora’ with life also works.

What I mean by this, is find that passion, find that joy, find that night light that makes you happy in ‘life’. I’ve never been good at metaphors like this, but I am going to be using this one, now.

I hope that every Fedora contributor thinks about what you have written and takes to their hearts the value of Red Hat and the Fedora Project. I truly believe in this community and am truly blessed to have so many amazing and awesome friends here.

For me, what makes me happy in life, beyond my family time and my kids, is the Fedora Project. I am not kidding, I really mean that from the bottom of my heart. The Fedora Project has given me more than I have contributed, been my mentor in many places and given me a career I wouldn’t have otherwise. I will always be grateful to my friends who got me involved with this amazing people.

I’ve been doing a bit of navel gazing lately. As I depart SCaLE later today, I have been thinking about what reasons I work in the Fedora Project. I think a lot of us didn’t get into Fedora for altruistic reasons, but after a while, they are the reasons to stay. Why do you stay?

I would like to invite everyone else to think in this way. Come up with some sort of project or activity that takes a few hours or a few weeks and make a plan. Share your plan, invite your friends to help make a better birdhouse!

Streaming FUDCon Tempe: This could turn out poorly!

So I’ve been recording and streaming FUDCon events over the past few years. I think I started back in 2008 when FUDCon was at Boston University. I’m still hoping to pull off streaming tomorrow at FUDCon Tempe for Jared Smith’s (our new amazing Fedora Project Leader) talk around 10am MST.

But I kind of have a few problems…

The icecast streaming server we previously setup on talk.fedoraproject.org appears to be off. I’m hoping to get a hold of someone who knows what happened to it and see if we can get that turned back on in time. Unfortunately, I’ve been busy with a million other things this weekend, so it’s not been top priority.
I used to have access to my own icecast server at stream.utos.org, but that server recently crashed, and I don’t have it back up as of yet.
Arizona State University technical staff, as amazing as they are, didn’t know of my request for a wired connection until today. Again, my fault for springing it on them last minute. It’s still possible they’ll get it done, here’s hoping!

Essentially, if these three things work out tomorrow, I still have to reconfigure my little PC to make streaming work. That should be less painful and much more simple.

BUT

Just in case streaming doesn’t happen, do not despair! As an alternate, I do plan to have the audio of Jared’s talk recorded. Once I have it cleaned up as best I can tomorrow, it will get pasted on the FUDCon Tempe page and I will blog a direct link for your consumption. It should be up by noon MST.

AND

In lieu of streaming the sessions, don’t forget to logon to #fedora-fudcon on irc.freenode.net tomorrow and follow the transcripts of each session. This started at FUDCon Toronto last time, and should be a good resource for watching the event from afar.

Now, to get some sleep!

On wireless and media, FUDCon Tempe configuration begins

Today, I’m sitting around the lobby at the fabulous Courtyard Marriott after a nice morning of listening to the fire alarm tests. It seems silly to me that anyone would allow the fire alarm to go off at 7:30 in the $%^&* morning at a hotel! Come on people, do the tests in the afternoon. The good part, however, is that the train right next to our room is no big deal and I slept right through the horns and vibrations. Even our 7 month-old slept through the night, YAY!

Today I’m heading over to the Brickyard Artisan Courtyard to test out the wireless access and make sure proper ports are open. I’m certain to run into issues, but I’m planning on making sure ssh is open for sure. If you have a particular port you want opened, please comment here or ping ‘herlo’ in irc before noon MST.

I’m also in charge of printing the Fedora Media and have brought a ton for FUDCon attendees. Watch for the media to be out near the registration tables and take a copy or three. I’m sure your friends back at home would love for you to share the love, so make sure you get plenty!

I’m ready for FUDCon Tempe, are you!?

FUDCon Tempe: Fun and Games

We’re packing up to complete our trip, leaving Flagstaff this morning and arriving in Tempe this afternoon. I’m excited to note that FUDCon has provided a space at our hotel for social and hacking events throughout the weekend, starting Tomorrow.

Even though FUDCon officially doesn’t start until Saturday morning, I’ll down in the meeting room at the Courtyard playing board games and discussing nerdy things with my Fedora friends. I’ve even brought a few board games with me to share.

Power Grid – Supply the most cities with power
Pandemic – Prevent a worldwide pandemic outbreak
Small World – Conquest and control of a world that is simply too small to accommodate them all.
Metro – Complete the longest rail lines against other players
Perudo – Sometimes called Liars Dice

FUDCon F13: Another SNAFU

As some of you may know, I have been working hard to get the Fedora 12 media ready for delivery. It’s been replicated, the sleeves printed and the boxes are waiting at our CD Replication vendor. However, even though we thought we had covered all of our bases, we missed some details with regard to the invoicing system.

I am very sad to report, there will not be any pressed F12 media at FUDCon this time.

However, I expect the financial details to be sorted out sometime between now and Monday. If this happens, it’s quite possible we can deliver media starting next week. Still pretty fast, considering.

I guess every FUDCon can’t be perfect, but we’re still going to make this a great event!

If you are in the area, or wish to participate from afar, we’ve got ways for you to get involved. FUDCon is always free and I’ve got two remote microphones and two mixers that I plan on using to record and stream the audio from two rooms. I’m also working on a way to stream/record the desktop of the presenter at the same time so we can have audio and video from the desktops in real time (we’ll see if this part happens). I might even suggest a hackfest on Monday to make it more solid if I can’t get it working tonight/tomorrow.

I’m excited to see all my friends at FUDCon.

News: Fedora 12 is NOW AVAILABLE!!

I’ve been running Fedora 12 for about a month now (Beta first, Alpha before that). It’s the best Fedora to date.

Everything Just Works(TM).

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a system working with great sound, awesome graphics and very usable GNOME and KDE desktops. I really like the new NetworkManager features and the ability to tether any device, vpnc and other easy-to-configure options. KVM support is much improved with the new libguestfs improvements.

Fedora 12 media should be available on December 3, if you are a Fedora Ambassador in North America, start requesting media* for your events (and ambassador kits).

UTOSC 2009: Breakfast is served!

As part of my effort to help out folks coming in for the Utah Open Source Conference 2009, we have filled up our household with out-of-towners. However, when I asked my awesome sweetie , Jennifer, about food, she had this reply:

SCaLE 7x: Improving the Fedora Remix Presentation

After getting permission from Paul W. Frields, the fearless Fedora Project Leader to use his slides to present the topic of Fedora Remix, I began to add and modify the presentation. I could see that some things had needed changing, this included changes to the look and feel. Let me share with you these changes and improvements.

Legal: The largest change was to the legal section, previously there wasn’t one mainly due to the fact that when Paul presented it at UTOSC 2008, the Fedora Remix secondary trademark was not yet available.
- For instance, one can now create a Fedora Remix and label it as such without asking permission of the Fedora Project or Red Hat
- There are now clear guidelines as to the distribution of such Remixes, which will make it easier to protect the Fedora trademark.
Artwork: The new Fedora Remix art allowed me to update the slides to include examples of some of the Fedora Remix logos (and one at the end with the four foundations) on every page as an OpenOffice.org Impress master slide set. Maybe I will make these into templates one day if I decide to learn how.
Approach: When Paul did his presentation, I recalled he built an install DVD using pungi, but I felt it more appropriate to show a LiveCD being built which then let me reboot into a LiveUSB after converting it with livecd-iso-to-disk.
- An additional thought I considered with my approach here (after I was done presentting, of course) would be to add the impress or pdf presentation loaded up in the Live Image.
- Also, a true Fedora Remix would be nice with packages that I’ve created (or someone else’s repo that’s FOSS) to show the actual proof in the pudding.

I felt it went very smoothly and was quite useful. I expect that the recorded version (I think they recorded it to video from what I recall) will be out in a short while. I expect that a few folks will take these very simple tools and get some cool Fedora Remixes in the works.

I look forward to seeing more Fedora Remix presentations in the future.
