Show me your talent : FUDCon Tempe

This morning I, along with about 100 other attendees at FUDCon Tempe pitched our barcamp sessions.  You can find the schedule here.

However, my pitch was a bit different than the rest.  Throughout the rest of the sessions from now until Sunday noon, I’ll be in room BYAC 190 to record your talent.  What I mean by this, is that I want you to come by and do a 5-15 minute presentation on your Fedora system that we can share with the community.

As an goal, I’m working to make videos that can help other Fedora contributors work toward gaining a larger skillset.  For example, a presentation on configuring a DNS caching server, configuring a simple smtp server, using Scribus, how to configure NetworkManager or SELinux basics could be good simple presentations.  As you can see, these topics could become very complex, but I’m mostly interested in the basics in these areas.

Once I get these recorded this weekend, I’ll process them on Sunday and Monday.  My goal is to get them up on the Fedora website somewhere (more details to come) by early next week.  Watch for another blog post when I get them online.

I’d like to thank you in advance for coming by and spending 10-15 minutes sharing your knowledge with Fedora and the free software community.

Cheers,

Herlo

Streaming FUDCon Tempe: This could turn out poorly!

So I’ve been recording and streaming FUDCon events over the past few years.  I think I started back in 2008 when FUDCon was at Boston University.  I’m still hoping to pull off streaming tomorrow at FUDCon Tempe for Jared Smith’s (our new amazing Fedora Project Leader) talk around 10am MST.

But I kind of have a few problems…

  1. The icecast streaming server we previously setup on talk.fedoraproject.org appears to be off.  I’m hoping to get a hold of someone who knows what happened to it and see if we can get that turned back on in time.  Unfortunately, I’ve been busy with a million other things this weekend, so it’s not been top priority.
  2. I used to have access to my own icecast server at stream.utos.org, but that server recently crashed, and I don’t have it back up as of yet.
  3. Arizona State University technical staff, as amazing as they are, didn’t know of my request for a wired connection until today.  Again, my fault for springing it on them last minute.  It’s still possible they’ll get it done, here’s hoping!

Essentially, if these three things work out tomorrow, I still have to reconfigure my little PC to make streaming work.  That should be less painful and much more simple.

BUT

Just in case streaming doesn’t happen, do not despair! As an alternate, I do plan to have the audio of Jared’s talk recorded.  Once I have it cleaned up as best I can tomorrow, it will get pasted on the FUDCon Tempe page and I will blog a direct link for your consumption.  It should be up by noon MST.

AND

In lieu of streaming the sessions, don’t forget to logon to #fedora-fudcon on irc.freenode.net tomorrow and follow the transcripts of each session.  This started at FUDCon Toronto last time, and should be a good resource for watching the event from afar.

Now, to get some sleep!

Herlo

Presenting at UTOSC 2010

Hi all,

Well, as you probably know, I am the originator and current manager of the Utah Open Source Conference.  As it turns out, this year, I am also presenting on a topic I’ve been working on for quite some time.  If you haven’t already, register for the conference and come see my presentation.

I’m presenting FreeSeeR: Capturing audio and video on the cheap, a talk about recording audio and video using completely free software and the best hardware at the lowest prices.

Also, all of our conference presentations this year are going to be recorded using FreeSeer.  This will be a fun and exciting experiment as FreeSeeR has been proven to work well in a conference environment.

I’m really excited to be sharing this information and meeting friends old and new.  I sure hope you can make it to the conference and possibly my presentation as well.

Cheers,

Herlo

Fedora Classroom: April 4-5, 2009 – We need your presentation

Well, it’s that time of the month again, this coming weekend April 4 & 5 will be the sessions for the Fedora Classroom. This month’s sessions are perfect for those in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Give a Presentation

If you are interested in helping us out with a presentation on anything related to Fedora or Free Software, we’d love to see it in the Fedora Classroom this weekend.  If you are not familiar with the MediaWiki syntax, just add a note on the wiki page or contact Kevin Fenzi (nirik) or me (herlo).

New MC

In addition, we have a new Master of Ceremonies for this session.  Max Spevack will head this up and help keep things on time.  We’d like to thank him for performing this vital service.

More Volunteers Needed

  • If you are interested in helping out with the IRC logs
  • We need you help us to spread the word about upcoming Fedora Classroom events.
    • Blog about it
    • Tell your friends
    • Invite someone to teach a class

If you can help or know someone who can help, feel free to contact either Kevin Fenzi (nirik) or me (herlo) and we’ll give you the low down.

Fedora Classroom: This weekend, presenters needed

Hi all,

It’s me, your friendly neighborhood Fedoran asking all of you to consider giving an irc class this month in the Fedora Classroom.  It doesn’t matter how complex the presentation is, just that you can help share some knowledge about free software.

If you are interested in participating, sign up today, and let myself (herlo) or Kevin (nirik) know in #fedora-classrom on irc.freenode.net.

Looking forward to seeing all the great presentations this weekend.

Cheers,

Herlo

Fedora Classroom: Sessions this Weekend

So, we’ve been slacking.  Probably the economy.  Or maybe it was FUDCon aftermath.  Maybe, just maybe, we were in fact, just lazy.  I don’t know…..but!!

It’s time again for the Fedora Classroom!!

If you aren’t familiar with the Fedora Classroom IRC sessions, we hold them about once a month in #fedora-classroom in irc.freenode.net.

This month’s session will be just on Saturday from 01:30 to 06:30 UTC (see this guide if you aren’t sure what times those are in your neighborhood).  We’ve got some good coverage of how Yum works, a little internationalization and updates on the new features in Fedora 11 (the Alpha just came out today).

I always find these sessions enlightening so come on by and participate!

Cheers,

Herlo
