Well, it’s that time of month again, time to come to BetaLoftSLC, eat some lunch (brown bagging is encouraged) and listen to a good technical talk. This month, we have Mr. Adam Barrett, a Senior Software Developer at SOS Staffing in Salt Lake City, who will be taking some time to talk with us about Vim. Here is a little snippet from Adam:

Vim 101 and Beyond

Vim is the editor of choice for many developers and power users. It’s a “modal” text editor based on the vi editor written by Bill Joy in the 1970s for a version of UNIX. It inherits the key bindings of vi, but also adds a great deal of functionality and extensibility that are missing from the original vi. This session will cover the beginnings (101) and the first set of intermediate (201) modes and commands for vim.

If you would like to join us, just head on down via train, car (parking is free on the street for two hours just east and west of BetaLoftSLC), walk or bike to:

WHEN

Wednesday, February 10, 2010
11:30am-1:00pm

WHERE

BetaLoft SLC

357 W 200 S #201

Salt Lake City, Utah

Map

Come learn some tips and tricks about Vim. We hope to see you all there.

Cheers,

Clint

This month we’re getting back on track with the Salt Lake Linux User Group Daytime meeting at BetaLoft. Our presenter this month is C.R. Oldham and he had this to say about the presentation:

RSSCloud is an open protocol which creates a loosely-coupled Twitter-like network of people and 140 character status messages. In plainer language, it enables real-time status updates on anything that can be pushed via RSS. Why should you care? Come to the SLLUG daytime SIG meeting to find out.

More information can be found at http://rsscloud.org/

So why not come down to BetaLoft next Wednesday, November 11, from 11:30am-1pm and learn about RSSCloud.

So tomorrow is Software Freedom Day. And because I’ve been a big slacker this year, I didn’t get the time to set up an event as I had hoped. However, because others in our community are awesome and didn’t want to see this day go completely to the Microsofties and non-free software folks, there’s going to be a Linux InstallFest at Utah Code Camp at Neumont University.

Now, I’ll be there from around 9am to about 1pm, so it might be good to come and hang out. I’ll be dropping some Fedora DVDs and CDs by (which I need more Live Media already gah!) so people can pick them up and try out the coolest operating system in the world!

At about 3pm, I’m headed over to a friends house for boardgames. We’re going to play ‘Arkham Horror’, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, which should be fun as I have never played it before. Both jennifer and I are attending with some friends I’ve had for a short while now. Should be a blast.

If it is really good, I’ll suggest playing it at the Boardgame Bash at UTOSC 2009 (you knew I couldn’t resist putting in a plug for the conference, did you?!)

Lastly, I’ll be settling in for the evening probably recovering from the hard week around 10 or 11 catch up on sleep and prep for golfing with my brothers on Sunday.

It’ll be a very nice weekend I think, looking forward to the excitement and relaxation. I’m very excited to be semi-busy, but doing what I love. I sure hope it turns out as well as I anticipate.

Cheers,

HI all,

This month’s SLLUG Daytime SIG meeting is this coming Wednesday, July 8, from 11:30am-1pm at BetaLoft. I apologize for being slow getting this out, we’ve been working through a big datacenter move this past week at work. Now that is over, it’s time for SLLUG Daytime at BetaLoft, (357 W 200 S Suite 201 Salt Lake City, UT, 84101). Here’s a map if you need directions.

I’d like to let you all know that I (Herlo) will be presenting this month, and the topic is: Cobbler, the powerful, installation, dhcp, dns and repo server!

If you have ever wanted to setup a system with pxe, dhcp, customized repositories and more, then cobbler is for you. Feel free to read up on the cobbler website before the meeting.

I should mention that cobbler supports several distributions of Linux, and will soon support Windows remote installation (using Linux RIS). Albeit, I’ll focus on setup of cobbler, a simple installation server with just one distro, using kvm and koan (kickstart over a network) with some basic networking and showing the gui tools as well.

Bring your lunch and your brains and learn all about setting up your very own install server in under an hour.

See you all on Wednesday!

Cheers,

Herlo

Hi all,

Now that I am back from the SouthEast LinuxFest at Clemson University, I wanted to report on the fun we had this weekend. I’m completely wiped out, but it was a very fun and productive weekend. I wanted to say thanks to the gang at SELF for a job well done. With only minor issues, they did an amazing job. They’re first year conference had attendance of 500+, that’s great to hear! Congratulation on such a great conference fellas!!

As far as my presentation, I was the victim of an apparent overheating of the projector. After about 20 minutes of fiddling, the staff got it all solved with a portable projector that was waiting in the wings. This did affect the time on my presentation though, so i wasn’t able to finish everything I wanted. However, we did a lot of Q&A up front and helped explain some of the four foundations from the Fedora Project and talked a bit about the tools while we were waiting. I usually show a completed customized liveusb, but ran out of time. I hope everyone enjoyed it anyway.

The booth area was packed, and every presentation seemed full, it was a great conference. I went to the after-party, where DualCore rapped for a while, which is always fun. The rest of the night was drinking, socializing and having an altogether good time. I recall eating at waffle house around 12:30am and then heading back to the hotel for some much needed sleep.

On Sunday, we spent a good bit of time on the Docs Fedora Activity Day (FAD), quite productive and we made some good goals for F12. I mostly helped by being an outsider looking in on this process, but did help Lee and Eric to understand packaging as Ian explained how packaging works. It was great to help the docs guys get the rest of the modules for Zikula into Fedora. I expect to see some good progress there over the next release period.

All in all, it was an awesome weekend, and if you ever get the chance, Mellow Mushroom pizza is the bomb! I also took a lot of pictures, they are available up on Flickr.

Cheers,

Lovely flight in First Class with Delta. There was a bit of weather in Atlanta so we ended up looping around for about 30 extra minutes. Not too bad, really. Got the car (thanks SELF organizers for picking up that tab) and drove up to Clemson, was very very long drive! Had to stop for food and caffeine about half way since it was nearly 1am at this point.

Working on my Fedora Remix presentation now, adding a few minor adjustments that should be fun. Including letting people pick packages from the audience, should be pretty entertaining.

At about 11pm last night, our presenter sent me a message indicating that there were some unresolvable conflicts and I wanted to get the word out that today’s meeting has been cancelled. I’ll be up at the Salt Lake Public Library to hang out and chat for an hour about whatever you all want, but there will be no presentation.

I apologize for the last minute notice. I’m hoping to have the Basics of Puppet presentation next month.

Cheers,

Presentation: Basics of Puppet
Presenter: Andrew Shafer

Next Wednesday, May 13 is the next SLLUG Daytime SIG meeting. We’ll be getting a great presentation on Puppet from Andrew Shafer of Reductive Labs. Andrew is a full-time Puppet developer and has been demonstrating the value of puppet for some time. He lives here in Salt Lake and is excited to show the basics of Puppet.

What is Puppet? (for the curious and uninitiated)

Puppet is an open-source next-generation server automation tool. It is composed of a declarative language for expressing system configuration, a client and server for distributing it, and a library for realizing the configuration.

More information is available here: http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions

———————————————————————————-

We meet in conference room A on the lower level of the Salt Lake Library. Head down the stairs, make a left turn. The conference room is directly under the foyer area (the area with all the shops on the 1st level) If you aren’t clear, ask the information desk.

Also, our meetings should be posted on the Electric Signs by the entrance to the library on the first floor.

Cheers,

Herlo
