For the past several months the fine folks at BetaLoftSLC have been hosting SLLUG Daytime and it’s been going pretty well. However, this month I was informed that BetaLoftSLC will be closing their doors at the end of March.

I was saddened to hear this, Drew and his crew have been doing a bang-up job and have been great hosts. We will surely miss the BetaLoft.

As all good things must end, I’ve decided to stop holding the SLLUG Daytime monthly meetings as well. We’ve had a good run and SLLUG Daytime has been decently attended. However, for several reasons which I will not go into here, I decided that I cannot run SLLUG daytime. If someone else is interested in pursuing the continuation of SLLUG Daytime on their own, I’d be happy to hand over the reigns.

But there is some good news to go with the bad. In the future, I plan to replace SLLUG Daytime with something of great value. Something we can do regularly as well, maybe just not monthly.

I want to thank all of those who’ve ever attended SLLUG Daytime and have made it such a success. I especially want to thank those who presented, as I know your time is precious, but you chose to prepare and share with us. A special thanks to the folks on the SLLUG board who graciously let us use the SLLUG name, it was much appreciated.

In the future, watch for more activities from the Utah Open Source Foundation, as well as more opportunities to participate in the community and grow free and open source software. I’m excited for the future.

Cheers,

Herlo

This month’s presentation is going to be awesome!! Shane Hansen will be spending time with us over lunch (bring your brown bag) at BetalLoftSLC talking about node.js.

Node.js – building massively parallel applications with javascript and epoll

Node.js [http://nodejs.org/] is a framework for rapidly building massively parallel network applications using non-blocking io. It’s built on the performant v8 javascript engine [http://code.google.com/p/v8/] which compiles javascript to machine code at runtime. Node is similar in design to systems like Ruby’s EventMachine [http://rubyforge.org/projects/eventmachine/] or python’s twisted [http://twistedmatrix.com/trac/]. It’s suitable for building chat-like protocols, comet servers, mmo game servers, etc. This session will cover some of the basics of how to build and install node.js as well as analyze some demo programs.

If time permits, I might talk a little bit about python’s twisted and compare some programs written using twisted/node.js

About Shane Hansen:

I’m a Software Engineer working on Backcountry.com’s replatforming teams. Prior to that I worked on projects ranging from compliance tracking software for the goverment to building mathematical models for reflectometry to immune system modeling. I’m interested in open source software, web standards, high performance computing and application architecture

Meeting Location:

BetaLoft (http://betaloftslc.com) is located at 357 W 200 S. Upstairs in Suite 201. Salt Lake City, UT, 84101

Betaloft is a coworking space in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City founded by Drew Tyler.

We are a community of freelancers, independents and work-from-home people, who have an interest in getting out of our dull work day and participating in a community that’s designed to support and encourage people who make a living doing what they love.

We provide communication tools, events (social and educational), as well as a physical space to work and collaborate.

See you all there!

Well, it’s that time of month again, time to come to BetaLoftSLC, eat some lunch (brown bagging is encouraged) and listen to a good technical talk. This month, we have Mr. Adam Barrett, a Senior Software Developer at SOS Staffing in Salt Lake City, who will be taking some time to talk with us about Vim. Here is a little snippet from Adam:

Vim 101 and Beyond

Vim is the editor of choice for many developers and power users. It’s a “modal” text editor based on the vi editor written by Bill Joy in the 1970s for a version of UNIX. It inherits the key bindings of vi, but also adds a great deal of functionality and extensibility that are missing from the original vi. This session will cover the beginnings (101) and the first set of intermediate (201) modes and commands for vim.

If you would like to join us, just head on down via train, car (parking is free on the street for two hours just east and west of BetaLoftSLC), walk or bike to:

Salt Lake City, Utah

Map

Come learn some tips and tricks about Vim. We hope to see you all there.

This month, I thought I would share a basic git introduction. In my opinion, the best Source Control Management (SCM) system out right now. I’ve been using it for nigh on a year and I have converted a few systems over to it from svn. This is more of a work session than a presentation, so come on down and learn how to use git. It is recommended that you bring your laptops with you as that will benefit more if you do.

Some suggested topics I can cover:

Local and remote git repositories (different workflows and other fun stuff)

Using git-svn to ‘convert’ from svn

Comparing Distributed Revision Control with Traditional (non-distributed) Revision Control

Git hooks, why they are valuable and when to use them

Other basic git discussions

See you all there.

Cheers,

This month we’re getting back on track with the Salt Lake Linux User Group Daytime meeting at BetaLoft. Our presenter this month is C.R. Oldham and he had this to say about the presentation:

RSSCloud is an open protocol which creates a loosely-coupled Twitter-like network of people and 140 character status messages. In plainer language, it enables real-time status updates on anything that can be pushed via RSS. Why should you care? Come to the SLLUG daytime SIG meeting to find out.

More information can be found at http://rsscloud.org/

So why not come down to BetaLoft next Wednesday, November 11, from 11:30am-1pm and learn about RSSCloud.

Hi all,

I’ve been a bit quiet about the SLLUG Daytime SIG meeting this month. That’s because I’ve been trying to decide whether we should continue to meet at the Salt Lake Public Library. While the library is a nice place to meet, I learned about a great new business opening up this month called BetaLoft. Last Tuesday, I visited BetaLoft and its founder Andrew Tyler has put together quite a nice facility for the first coworking location in Salt Lake City. Located right downtown near traxx and the Gateway, it’s very convenient (and free) parking on the streets to the east and west, make this place a great location for our SLLUG Daytime SIG meeting.

Due to this change, and the short notice of the change, I will try to send out a few reminders between now and Wednesday. Our normal meeting time 11:30am-1pm is still set. BetaLoft has some great conference facilities, plus they have a big flat screen tv for Rock Band. So it should be a blast!

So where is BetaLoft, you ask? Here’s the information:

BetaLoft
357 W 200 S, Suite 201 (in the same building as Aculis) (map)
Salt Lake City, Utah 84101

Now that the new location is decided, please come on down to our new digs and learn about IPTables. Kevin Benko has prepared a presentation on the basics of IPTables. For those of you who were discussing this on the mailing list, this is your opportunity to come and have the discussion.

Cheers,

Herlo

Hi all, just sending out a reminder that the SLLUG Daytime SIG will be meeting this Wednesday @ 11:30am. The presentation details are below:

Cooking with PAM

Thad Van Ry will cover the basics of Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM). If you’re a Sys Admin who wants to know how PAM can help you or hurt you, this meeting is for you. Thad will go over the different stacks available as well as how to call modules and their control flags.

Thad is a Linux System Administrator for the LDS Church. He has been using Linux in his work life for the past 12+ years.

We meet in conference room A on the lower level of the Salt Lake Library. Head down the stairs, make a left turn. The conference room is directly under the foyer area (the area with all the shops on the 1st level) If you aren’t clear, ask the information desk. A map is available of all floor plans of the library.

Also, our meetings should be posted on the Electric Signs by the entrance to the library on the first floor.
