Today, I deployed the latest fpaste-server package on a development box within Fedora Infrastructure.

Test fpaste-server

I’d like to get some folks to hit it and do some testing. If you have time, I would love it if you could take a moment, read below and help.

On the development server

To help, just point your browser to http://paste01.dev.fedoraproject.org/ and add some pastes. In fact, it should be pretty sturdy. If you do happen to find a bug, please file it on our fedorahosted.org Trac instance.

Roll your own

Another way to help is to install your own instance of fpaste-server. I’ve posted some simple installation instructions for anyone who is interested.

We are always looking for helpers to make fpaste-server better. Please contact me (herlo AT fedoraproject doT Org) if you are interested in helping improve or maintain this simple and fun project.

Cheers,

Folks, it’s been a few crazy weeks for me recently. Tons and tons of activity in my life. All of which has been good, so very good!

Wedding on Friday the Thirteenth

On May 13, Jennifer and I were wed at a wonderfully pretty chapel downtown in Salt Lake City. The Holy Cross Historic Chapel, inside the Salt Lake Regional Medical Center is very pretty. Although a bit hot in the chapel that day, it was a beautiful ceremony. I was very excited when Jennifer walked down the aisle. So beautiful! And when she said ‘heck yes’ to the question of marriage, I was very excited.

The reception was even more awesome and the best part of the whole day. All of our good friends and family came and enjoyed some of the most awesome food at the Wild Rose in South Jordan. If you have not been to this restaurant, I suggest you check it out. Awesome food, awesome environment and Ken Rose, the owner-chef extraordinaire went above and beyond on everything!

The Honeymoon

On Sunday, May 16, we flew to Miami. As we left the Salt Lake airport, Jennifer was a bit misty-eyed as we left AJ behind. Monday, we boarded the Norwegian Sky and enjoyed a 4-day cruise to the Bahamas. This being the first cruise for Jennifer and I, it was a ton of fun, but definitely not the culture we were expecting. Again, amazing food and great sites every day.

On Tuesday, we spent a good day out and about on Grand Bahama Island. Snorkeling and a deserted island with lots of good drinks and new friends. I really enjoyed the conch demonstration and later on, conch fritters at a little bar at Port Lucaya. Almost missed the last bus, but such a fun time.

Overall, quite an enjoyable time.

UTOS Project Day

Today was the UTOS Project Day. We’ve been planning on having a few more of these and today’s was no different. Quite an excellent event for those who made it out. Tons of hacking, snacking and collaborating. I had to run out to my niece Tanja’s 1st birthday part, which was excellent and tons of fun, for part of the day. Overall, lots of good geeking out was had today!

We’re planning another Project Day for August 27. Make plans now to come out and hack. More details to come very soon!

South East Linux Fest (SELF)

If you are going to SELF this year, or have heard about it just here, I recommend you all try to get out to this amazing event. It’s a great weekend conference in Spartanburg, South Carolina, June 10-12.

Unfortunately, I was trying to work out attending this event, but will not be able to make it due to many reasons. I went to the first SELF, and am sad that I haven’t been able to make it sense. It’s on my list for 2012 again, so here’s hoping.

The Future

Well, as you might be able to see, plenty of good things have been happening. Wedding, Honeymoon, Project Day and more work than I can handle is coming right along.

Recently, I announced the Silver project, an easy-to-use development environment for web development. I’ve been busy improving and should be able to release v0.3 by the end of June. Several good bug fixes and new features should bring more and more functionality, making it easier to do QA and deploy to live environments using Silver.

In the near future, another project I’ve been working on will be announced. I’m hoping it will happen in the next month or two. It’s the project that has been filling in the gaps while I wasn’t busy with the wedding, honeymoon or working. I am very excited to announce this project soon, so keep an eye out in the next little while!

Cheers,

Herlo

Are you planning on attending the UTOS Project Day this Saturday, May 28? Come work on your projects in an open environment with food, friends and feedback.

Folks, since Fedora 15 was just released yesterday, I had an idea regarding the UTOS Project Day. I’m going to setup an installation server and usb keys for anyone who wishes to try out and/or install Fedora 15 on their computer.

There are only a couple requirements:

If you want the media on your USB key, you must provide at least a 2GB key. (Any existing data should be preserved, but make a backup just in case.)

Installations will be done using network boot, which requires a PxE capable laptop. Most are these days, just make sure yours supports this feature.

UTOS Project Day is going to be tons of fun. Come on down and try out Fedora 15, work on your project., or help someone else work on theirs.

Here’s to seeing all my geek friends this weekend at UTOS Project Day!!

Cheers,

Herlo

I thought a few of you might be interested in a project I’ve recently started, called Silver.

Today, I released version 0.2. Silver is a full-fledged development environment built on one machine built purely in Python. Silver (formerly PyCamps) is inspired by the Perl based DevCamps project created by EndPoint. The idea is simply to make it easy for developers to have their own little environments to build web applications.

Silver is built to enable work on several projects in small, reusable areas, called camps. Focused on web applications, Silver helps to make quick and easy-to-manage environments. Each camp uses version control, and gives the developer ultimate control. Silver enables an easy workflow for quality assurance, integration testing and deployment to production for each project in similar workflows.

Building a camp is simple, easy and very flexible for both corporate and community projects. I’d like to get some feedback on Silver and am looking forward to continuing work toward more power and flexibility.

More information can be found by reading the documentation at http://projects.purpleatom.com/silver/0.2/index.html. Silver also has a github repository if you’d like to try to set it up.

Tell me what you think! It is of course open source, with an MIT license, and I am hoping some of you will join up and help the project grow!

If you are interested, please join the Silver Project google group and let’s build the awesomest development environment of the future, with Python!

Cheers,

Herlo

Well, I think I had better get another day of the challenge out there. This one was quite an easy one for me, though there are a few good rivals. I have to say that I really didn’t start to enjoy reading books until I was in my early 30s. Thus, a lot of my life I didn’t read, and while others might be much more well read.

Anyway, on to my choice, I did think about other good book like ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy‘ and ‘Angels and Demons‘, I chose the ‘Ender’s Game‘ series of books.

Ender’s Game led me into a world of imagination I didn’t know existed. For me, reading became not only an escape, but a pure joy. I could escape into these books for hours during a difficult time in my life. I would become engrossed in possibilities and twists and turns and of course, the surprise ending of Ender’s Game is what made the book so good.

The book series has such grand dynamics and scale. The politics of later books is intriguing as well, Ender, his brother and sister and Ender’s friend, Bean, all were excellent. I really enjoyed Xenocide, a book where Ender spends time with the Hive Queen and the piggies while trying to determine how to irradicate the Descolada.

Other books I enjoyed in this series were Speaker for the Dead and Children of the Mind, I also enjoyed The Shadow Saga series as well. I highly recommend these books and might just go pick up where I left off a few years back.

Cheers,

Herlo

This post is part of my ‘30-day Geek Challenge‘. As I stated, the order isn’t important, nor will I do one per day. Feel free to make your own list, or copy mine and participate. Should be a lot of fun!

I have been thinking on this one for a few days. Mostly, I was thinking back to the first geek I could remember, but for some reason, nothing was coming to mind. It was weird.

At first, I thought maybe the first geek I knew of was my programming and system administration mentor. His name was Mr Chumple (aka Paul Tiemman). I met him back in 1999 when I worked as a programmer for Big Planet, an ISP company which was originally an investment from Nu Skin and then later purchased and rolled into it’s MLM conglomerate. He taught me the ropes about programming, Linux and shell scripting. Red Hat 5.1 was the first version I ever learned and it was fun. Running WindowMaker was awesome! (still is) I learned about Linus Torvalds and how he said ‘Linux’ :) I still am very grateful to Mr. Chumple for all the time he spent with me during our time together at Big Planet.

Takes me back…

Later on, I continued to think more about the first geek I recognized.

Was it Bill Gates? No, surely not. I mean, I had heard of him, but I don’t think I knew really who he was until I was using Windows 95.

Was it Steve Jobs? Nope, he wasn’t even in the picture in my mind until he started appearing on talk shows and was the face of Apple. I remember him being forced out of Apple, but I don’t think he was it either.

So, more thinking, more cycles…and it hit me. It wasn’t time to share with you about the First Geek I recognized.

My Geek Hero

Tonight, sitting at my computer, perusing Facebook I noticed a post from my friend Travis about Alan Turing. Now that’s a guy I truly think of as a genius. A guy who was truly a geek in every sense of the word. So intelligent, so reclusive, so amazing, an enigma, if you will.

I remember reading about Turing in High School, probably senior year. It was most definitely in a math class, might have been geometry. The teacher was so enamored with the algorithms and the amazing things Turing did, I couldn’t help but look him up.

At the time, I wasn’t very interested in math, I’m still no good at it today. But one thing that Turing did for me was help me to understand algorithms better. Later on, in college, my discrete structures professor brought Turing back up, when the course covered the Turing machine. The class talked about Turing complete algorithms, essentially how the rules followed in sequence on arbitrary data can produce the result of any calculation. Many of the modern programming languages and compilers implement Turing complete systems.

In the Facebook post I mentioned above, it appears there will be released a documentary about Alan Turing. Including World War II, Computing, Code breaking and more. In the preview they showed, which is available on Youtube, one gentleman mentions that it was a shame he died so early on. If he’d have lived twice as long, the world would be completely different. I don’t know if the world would have been better, but I do know that Alan Turing, my geek hero, surely has done more for the computing community than most.

Thank you for modern computing, Mr. Turing.

Cheers,

Herlo

This post is part of my ‘30-day Geek Challenge‘. As I stated, the order isn’t important, nor will I do one per day. Feel free to make your own list, or copy mine and participate. Should be a lot of fun!

Okay folks, this is probably one of the easier ones in my mind. When I was a kid, I loved to watch the General Lee driving all over those hillbilly back roads of the South. The Dukes of Hazzard, were my favorite to watch ‘out-Duke’ Boss Hogg and his sidekick ‘Rosco P. Coltrane’ every week. I would watch for Cooter and Uncle Jesse to come along and help out the Duke boys when they needed it the most. And of course, when things got really dire, their very sexy cousin Daisy Duke, would pretend to stand out on the side of the road with a broken-down car.

Although an attempt to remake the Dukes of Hazzard into a movie more or less bombed in 2005, I thought it was a good attempt. You just can’t do it right without Tom Wopat, John Schneider and Catherine Bach.

But this article is about the theme song. It’s a doozy! The Good Ol’ Boys, written and sung by none other than Waylon Jennings made the exciting chases just that much better. The song hit number 1 the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles in 1980.

[youtube oU6mPYFtF8E]

I’ve also included a link to the theme song for your enjoyment.

Cheers,

Herlo

I took a lot of liberty here, but I think this should be ‘any’ vehicle. It doesn’t matter if the vehicle is real or imaginary in my mind. So I went with a cartoon vehicle.

Voltron

As a kid, I loved watching Voltron on television. All 5 lion robots converted to make one amazing crime-fighting, flying and powerful robot. They would al

ways fight Prince Lotor, and as with many of the cartoons of my childhood, he would escape before Voltron could stop him for good.

What’s even better, you can watch ‘Voltron Force’ on Nicktoons starting this spring! So become a nerdy kid again,

and enjoy some Voltron force!

Cheers,

Herlo
